Snowland Foundation Recreation and Education Area is made possible through the generous support of these organizations:
Snowland in the News:
Press Release: May 14, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sanpete County Utah: Snowland Foundation LLC, a Utah based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in concert with Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant and Snow College in Ephraim Utah have come together to re-open and improve the Snowland Recreation and Education Area (SREA) located in Fairview Canyon, Utah along Highway 31.
Snowland was originally opened in 1967 by the Jerry Nelson family, who operated the resort for many years. Mr. Nelson and his family’s efforts to create a small ski resort has inspired new vision.
Snowland Foundation is a group of local volunteers gathered to re-open Snowland to the public for outdoor recreation and educational use.
SREA will boast a renovated Nelson lodge, complete with public restrooms, concessions, and improved parking. Skiers and snowboarders will be able to use a rope tow and surface lift that will transport them up the mountain.
SREA will be opened to the public Friday through Sunday. Snow College and Wasatch Academy will use the facilities for outdoor and environmental classes along with other educational purposes. To accommodate education, two yurts are planned to be installed that can also be used for classrooms, mountain-based weddings, family reunions,
conferences, etc.
The State of Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant program recently approved a $1 million dollar donation to help fund phase one of a two-phased approach to reopen Snowland. The second phase, subject to the Manti-Lasal National Forest approval of a modified or new special use permit would include the yurts and surface lift.
Part of the objective is to provide extremely affordable day passes and even more affordable season passes for locals and students who currently use the area via vehicle shuttling up and down the dangerous and often overcrowded highway.
Snowland Foundation’s Chairman Brent Lange thanks its many volunteers who have provided a significant number of hours of work, those involved with funding and other efforts to breathe new life into this amazing community asset. In addition to the executive team that includes Wasatch Academy (Paul Applegarth) and Snow College (Robert
Nielson), Snowland thanks the many public representatives such as Mayor Welch from Fairview City, the Sanpete County Commission and its economic development and travel and tourism directors, the Outdoor Recreation Grant Committee Members and many more.
The opening for phase one improvements which includes the re-installation of the rope tow, the newly remodeled Nelson Lodge and other public infrastructure improvements is slated for the winter season of 2026-27.
